How to Prepare Your Home for Popcorn Ceiling Removal

Getting ready for popcorn ceiling removal comes down to four things: test the texture if the house was built before 1987, empty the room as far as you can, take down anything fixed to the ceiling, and give the crew a clear path in. Do those and the popcorn ceiling removal cost stays at the quoted figure instead of growing with extra protection time. Here is the list in the order to do it.

What do I do first?

If the house was built before 1987, the popcorn may contain asbestos, and the first step is a lab test on a sample, which runs about $50 to $100. We do not scrape untested ceilings from that period. If it tests positive, the work belongs with a licensed abatement contractor, not us, and we will say so. Do not scrape, drill or poke the ceiling to take your own sample without reading Popcorn ceilings in a 1970s or 80s home: What Causes It and What Actually Fixes It.

Also fix any active leak before the job. A ceiling that is still getting wet needs the source dealt with first.

What needs to come out of the room?

Item What to do
Furniture Out of the room if possible; if not, push to the centre
Pictures, mirrors, shelves Off the walls, since the work is overhead and above them
Curtains and blinds Down, and washed or bagged
Rugs Up if you can; the floor gets covered either way
Ceiling fans Ask us; some come down, some are covered
Light fixtures Usually left in place and covered; tell us if you want them off
Fragile items, electronics Out of the room and the rooms next to it

The crew puts down plastic, sets up zip walls and runs a HEPA vac, but the less in the room, the faster the work moves.

What does the crew need access to?

  • A clear path from the door to the room, and a place to put drop cloths and buckets.
  • Water. Wet scraping starts by misting the ceiling so the popcorn releases instead of tearing the paper facing, so a working outside tap or sink matters.
  • Power. A standard outlet for the HEPA vac and lights.
  • A way to keep the house cool. Skim coat and texture dry faster with air moving. Leave the air conditioning on, within reason.
  • Pets and kids elsewhere. Ladders, plastic and wet floors are not for them.

What should I expect while it is happening?

Expect noise, some wet mess inside the plastic, and a few rooms off limits for a few days. Dust control is on every interior job, not a bedsheet over the doorway. Most people stay home, though anyone with breathing problems should plan to be elsewhere during scraping and sanding. The sequence is scrape, skim, retexture or smooth, then dry; How Long Does Popcorn Ceiling Removal Take? explains why it takes a few days and not a few hours.

When the job is done, the ceiling is ready for paint. We do drywall only, so the painting is yours or your painter's. Give the texture the drying time we tell you before painting.

What if I am not ready to commit?

That is fine. We give photo estimates by text, so you get a price without booking a two-hour appointment window. Do not hire anyone, us included, until you know the test result in a pre-1987 house.

Text photos of each ceiling to (352) 561-3616 with the year the house was built, and we will give you a free quote, which starts from $2 per square foot depending on height, paint layers and finish. The job is described on the popcorn ceiling removal page.
