How to Prepare Your Home for Drywall Repair
You do not need to do much to prepare for drywall repair: clear a few feet around the damage, take pictures and breakables off nearby walls, secure pets, and make sure the crew has a clear route in. The bigger preparation is knowing what to expect, because patching drywall is not a one-hour in-and-out job when it is done properly. This guide covers what to move, what the day looks like, and what we need from you. Our drywall repair starts from $185 per repair, and the prep below keeps the visit short and the price down.
What should I move before the crew arrives?
Clear a working zone of about three to four feet around the damage, more if it is a ceiling patch. We work with ladders, plastic sheeting and a vacuum, so loose furniture in the way slows everything down.
| Where the repair is | What to do |
|---|---|
| Wall at hand height (doorknob hole, dent) | Move furniture a few feet away, take down pictures and shelves nearby |
| Wall near a window or door (corner crack) | Remove curtains or blinds that hang over the damaged area |
| Ceiling | Clear the floor beneath, move or cover furniture, remove light fittings only if we have agreed it |
| Garage or hallway | Clear a route for ladders and a vacuum, and move vehicles or bins that block the way |
If an item is heavy or you cannot move it, tell us beforehand. We would rather plan around it than discover it on the day.
How do you control dust?
Joint compound sands to a fine powder that travels through a home. On every interior job we use plastic, zip walls and a HEPA vac, not a bedsheet over the doorway. That contains most of it, but not every speck. What helps from your side:
- Close or tape off air returns and vents in the room if you know how. If not, tell us and we will handle it.
- Cover sofas, beds and electronics in or near the room.
- Take small valuables and open shelving contents out of the area.
You will still want a quick wipe of surfaces after, but you should not be dealing with white dust through the whole house.
What do I need to be ready for on the day?
Expect a few hours of work for a small repair and a second visit for anything needing three coats. We cut back to sound board, back the patch, set it flush, then coat in passes. The texture is sprayed and knocked down to match your wall at the end. Mud has to dry properly between coats, and in Central Florida humidity that can take longer on a damp day, so we plan the second visit around the weather, not the clock. For typical timing, see How Long Does Drywall Repair Take?
Practical points:
- Someone should be home to let us in and answer questions.
- Tell us about pets. A dog and an open door do not mix with a ladder.
- Make sure there is a working outlet nearby for the vacuum and any tools.
- Let us know about parking or gate codes in advance.
- Keep children out of the work area. Sanding dust and ladders are not for kids.
What if the damage is wet or has a history of leaks?
Tell us before we start. A patch over damp board fails, so if the wall or ceiling has been wet recently, the leak has to be found and fixed first and the area dried out. If you are not sure, send a photo and say what happened. We have more on this in A Brown Stain Spreading Across the Ceiling: What Causes It and What Actually Fixes It.
What should I do about paint?
The repair is finished to a paint-ready surface once the texture matches. Whether painting the patch is part of your quote is something to confirm up front, so you are not guessing afterwards. If you are repainting the whole room anyway, tell us. It changes the order of the work: repair first, paint last, so the paint covers the repair and the surrounding wall evenly.
What should I not bother doing?
You do not need to sand the damaged area, fill the hole yourself or add tape to "help." A half-done patch means we have to cut it back first, and a failed old patch costs more than a clean hole. Leave the damage as it is and take a few photos. A photo estimate by text means you get a price without booking a two-hour appointment window.
How do I get started?
Text a photo of the damage to (352) 561-3616 with a note about whether it is on a wall or ceiling and the room it is in. We will give you a free quote and tell you what, if anything, you need to move first.
